Hi There,
I heard to bordercrossing from Mauretania into Senegal is very hard at Rosso because of the hassle. Anyone got any alternatives?
Thanx,

Take a right through the taxi/bus terminus (or parking area) about 200m before the LAST fuel station before you reach the border. There is a piste that leads off from it to another border control near the coast (about 80km from Rosso). I can't remember the na,e of the border post but it was something like "Diama". Some of the touts near the Rosso border will tell you that the piste is closed but ignore them - I crossed there less than a month ago. You will still get hassled by the Customs and Police on either side for "taxes" etc but there are no crowds or touts etc.
St Louis and a cool are not far from there.

Just crossed the Rosso Senegal border yesterday and as long as you keep your cool it will be fine. To leave Mauritanie we paid about 9000CFA including the ferry plus some other unclear -without- receipt stuff... Our motorbikes were put on the ferry first, the police want 10euros per person for that.. he got a bit agro when we clearly had no intention of paying. On the Senegal side we paid 130euro each for the 3 month carte brune, probably a bit on the high side. Its worth investigating in Mauri if you can get a better deal...

I've heard the best is to go to the diama crossing in the middle of the night. Supposedly it's "open" all night but they want to get back to sleep, so they don't keep you there for any unneccesary hassles.
Anything has to be better than rosso. We were kept waiting for hours on a side street. While the officials where taking us for fees, the local kids were climbing all over our cars, begging us for money, stealing small items off the cars and we even had a flat tire from a kid standing on our valve stem while trying to climb on the car.
