The main thing to do is to aim for the Diama border crossing and not Rosso, no matter what local tells you otherwise. It's straightforward there. You can use a "fixer" who is a mix of a translator and palm-greaser, or DIY. Do not go to Rosso, and don't worry about any €250 "old vehicle" fee as it doesn't apply to bikes.
Happy travels!

I'm interested in this topic too, I will follow! But what is the problem in Rosso?

There is a very sophisticated scamming/extortion crew operating there in cahoots with the officials. If you're a very experienced traveller, have done lots of African borders and are fluent in French you will have a much better time there but you will need a lot of it—and persistence and patience. Invisible barriers will be put up to prevent you from moving forward without paying.

I read a blog from a cyclist the other day and I think that's where she crossed. Someone on HU put a link up "Pushbikegirl". Its a great read with some fantastic photos

I have been thinking of taking a pirogue from Bogue to visit Podor, without stamping in to Senegal, and then return to Mauretania.
There need to be proper passport services on both sides for us to cross. Also, there are no bridges of ferries from Rosso all the way to Kayes, but that may change.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
