Car into Senegal/Pass Avant
Brought our 1996 Defender through senegal in december with a carnet. Passed border at Diama no problem at 6pm. Douane issued Pass Avant for 15euro and told us we had to get it stamped in Dakar within 4 days at the Touring club. All police stops asked for this document. Went to see about getting it stamped and the supposed head of the touring club (who is a fool/tool) first told us it was impossible for us to be in the country with our car and then wanted 40Euro to stamp the carnet and come with us to the customs to get the pass avant extended. Told us he felt sorry for us that we had a huge problem and could go to jail at any stage!!! No way! Smell of scam!!! Went to the internet to look up official douanne web site (thanks Susan and Ike) where it stated that tourist with a carnet do not need a pass avant, color printed this page and only 2 minutes from the internet we were stopped by very agressive police demanding the Pass Avant in no uncertain terms even with the carnet. Stayed calm and showed him the page from the web. We won! No problems with police south of Dakar and at the border. So just watch for this latest PassAvant farce.
