COVID-19: border closures in sub-Saharan Africa
With immediate effect. Only possibility is if you agree on a 14 day quarantine!
I was today at the Santa Clara Border and was already processed in to Angola when health officials grabbed me, put me a mask and gloves on and took me to a room. Here my passport was checked and many questions asked, especially where I come from and why I want to enter.
After many hours waiting, I was told that Luanda has decided that I can’t enter because i’m coming from South Africa and I left Europe only 13 days ago. Both countries have Corona Virus, hence no entry for me.
This will likely continue sometime.

I have made this a sticky and renamed the thread as shown because the border closures across sub-Saharan Africa will probably go the way of North Africa soon.
Please post useful info and limit the chat so info is easily found and read by users.

Anyone have any updates on borders? This thread hasn't been updated in literally a full year.
I've heard a lot of unofficial stories about the borders, often conflicting one another.

Things got a whole lot worse since this thread was started and overland travel as we knew it has come to a standstill. I think most of us assume that right now all African borders are closed – especially for us tourists from countries with much higher infection rates – until we hear otherwise and the vaccination programme has had more impact.
I would give it another year.
What have you heard about which borders?

Only a few African countries have been hit hard by covid both in absolute numbers and relative to their other regular infectious diseases (South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia). The lockdowns otoh are devastating to health and economy.
Nothing's really open at the moment. And nothing we can do about it.

Lots of upto date info in the Overlanding West Africa and Morocco facebook Group and the Overlanding Africa Group. Quite a few members travelling at the moment and dealing with the situation as they go
Morocco is closed to 36 countries at present. The border between Morocco and Mauritania closed to all tourists. I believe the Mali and Senegal borders are also closed but not really upto date on those.

I have unstuck this thread as Covid-wise, travel seems pretty much back to the old normal and will hopefully stay that way.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
