Egypt - Sudan

I just rode my motorbike (KTM 790R) from Cairo to Khartoum; hereafter some info:

Clearing Customs in `Cairo is a nightmare; it took me 6 working days to get the bike out. I used Kamar *+20 100 6922657‬ as a fixer, very efficient.

No police escorts anymore in Egypt, except 200 Km before Abu Simbel
Many police check points in Egypt, takes time but they are friendly and no corruption
Don’t take any pictures of policemen, military or official equipment

I used the ferry from Abu Simbel to Wadi Halfa, the land border seems to be used only by trucks, crossing for private vehicles seems to be pretty complicated as they are not used to private travellers

There was no fuel in Sudan, so I had to carry enough in a jerrycan I bought in Aswan

Fixer used to leave Egypt: Kamal Muawad *+20 110 0504841‬
Fixer used to enter Sudan: Mazar Mahir *+249 12 238 0740‬ or *+249 91 107 5226‬
You need a fixer on both sides
Use WhatsApp to get in contact with fixers

I store my bike in Khartoum with Mazar’s brother *+249 91 297 2571‬ whom I know since 2005

Safe travel

Thanks for the update. Was in Sudan on my r1150gs this time last year (going North) and your experience confirms my decision at that time to cross to Saudi rather than go through Egypt.

Sorry I missed the sights of Egypt, though

Thanks for this update. Do you know if police escorts would be required for going into the desert? White desert, Siwa, or Gilf? We're not there now, but maybe in a year or so. Always good to hear first hand updates.

Was it easy for you to find a place to get a Covid-test before entering Sudan?

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
