For Mauretania you get it at the border
then you buy carte brun insurance for all Ecowas countries
you can get that in Nouakchott around 20000 CFA 14000 ougiya for one month
or you get it in Mali/Senegal

Where in Nuakchott? I've been to AGM, the place that's supposed to do it but they say they don't. Also, I'm sure I read a post here from a guy who said it works out about 50 cents a day???

If you are at one of the Auberges, like Auberge Sahara, ask the patron to call a buy who will come by and sell you any insurance you need

Ha ha. He may, but on Africa time. He said he would do it four days ago. I was still waiting when I decided to find the shops myself (he told me where to go). I'm still waiting for him to take me to the hospital to get some fake yellow fever documents that he said he's do four days ago!!!

Ye, I'd certainly forget that idea for the future.
I eventually did track down the one shop that was supposed to do it, GAMA, where they seemed very professional and honest. It seemed too good to be true at 8,000 Ougiya for three months.
At the Senegal border I was told that this only covered Mauritania.
I think the guy who sold to me in Nouakchott genuinely thought it covered all of Africa, but it seems just about certain that it doesn't (I'm taing the word of the guy who sells it at the Senegal border, but his argument didsem convincing).
Long story short, it seems fairly certain that while you could as recently as six months ago, you can no longer buy Ecowas insurance in Mauritania.
And at 52 euro for three months in a very straight forward transaction at Diama (the easy Senegal/Mauritanina border), there's no good reason to try otherwise.
For what it's worth, nobody checked my insurance (or lack of it) in all of Mauritania
