Mate, I got mine at the border with no hassle at all. It cost 15,000 CFA. It's only valid for 5 days so when you get to Bamako you have to renew it, which is free and gives you 3 months.

I've only done it from Cote d'Ivoire, but I met some people coming visa Guinea and they got their visa at the border without a problem.

Crossing into Mali from Guinee is no problem at all, but if you fail to extend your visa in Bamako you will see big smiles on the faces of all officials you meet afterward, and have lots of opportunities to practice your negotiating skills.

When I was there, extensions took quite a bit of time and involved some back and forth between two separate offices. I later heard it was far easier in Mopti, if that's of interest. In any case, I'd bring a supply of patience.

I got mine in Nouakchott, same day. Be careful applying at border, I was told I could get a Benin 48 hour visa at the border with Niger. They don't do that anymore and sent me back to Niamey to apply at the Embassy. 300 km round trip with some bad roads. I would double check your info.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
