Need A Winch!

We left England without buying a winch, and so far we havent needed it...
However... we have a feeling that with the conditions we are about to encounter thru West & Central Africa we might be regretting out initial decision!

In Dakar right now - just in case we change our minds - does anyone know of a 4x4 specalist in the area that may sell them?

Any other recomendations of the most economical way to get one in W Africa or shipped to us, are welcome too!

Thanks a bunch!

Ramsey, Warn and Superwinch all have dealers in South Africa. Contact information is on their websites, at least for Ramsey and Warn. 'winch name'.com
I would contact these dealers and ask their advice regarding shipping.

You'll need a mounting system for the winch, a fairlead and also check that the winch comes with proper battery leads. If there are no trees or large rocks in the area, you'll need to create an anchor.

Understand the limits of the winches, otherwise you could disable your vehicle worse than just being stuck.

The alternative is to get a manual 'turfor' winch...

Some discussion here http://www.pajeroclub.com.au/forum/f...?TID=7477&PN=1

Good option.

Regardless, carry a heavy duty 3-4"x30' nylon snatch strap (not a polyester tow strap), D-ring/clevis and short length of chain w/grab hooks for attaching to another vehicle. Two straps if in very sandy areas. They can be safely looped together w/o using hardware.

Vehicle recovery can be fun or hated.

Thanks

Appreciate the feedback, we'll check out the links and do our research

With the exception of a ground anchor - we've got most of what we need to go along with the winch like the shackles, the straps and a nice spot on our ARB bumper for the winch to fit...just need the winch :-)

if anyone has something different to offer that is helpful, thanks to let us know!

You have one.
A spare tire/wheel buried upright works well.

Winches.

I have them on my Land Rovers, and in a total of 20+ months travelling over last 10 years have used them less than 10 times.

Look cool, but you can do without easily.

Sam.

I travelled over 65.000 km in Africa... without a winch, and I never needed one.

Good luck
