Northern Kenya Isiolo to Moyale

I just wanted to give some feedback of my experience of this route . It was the part of my journey that worried me the most for all the reasons you as over landers have read about or heard about . It has been a few days since crossing into Ethiopia so I have had time to come down from my euphoric state . It was damn tough , the Vespa aside , two long days of riding , but not as bad as some of the reports I have read , soon it will all be tar, not the almost half it currently is. With that the sense of adventure and achievement will be covered by the tar in the next year or two .The landscape has already changed due to all the construction , sad in a way . I never once felt threatened or unsafe , just tired and dusty . I am so glad I decided to ride it , my trans Africa experience is richer for it . Things change quickly so it is prudent to enquire . The advice I got was to ignore the hype and ride and that is the best advice I could have gotten . I almost put the scooter on a truck , everybody told me that would be the best and luckily I did not . The dramatic beauty of that part of the world as I think back just wow.

I also had feelings of trepidation before riding this section of road back in 2007 and it was quite hard going in places but am glad I did it before the tarmac went down. I am pleased to say my then 25 year old G/S did it without a hitch 22 years after first covering that piece of road with its original owner, I on the other hand had to be helped off of the bike when we stopped for the night in Marsabit.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
