A search of the posts didn't cough up the information I was looking for so I'm putting it to the group. I have a vehicle in Kenya that has an expired Foreign Private Vehicle tax certificate. I would like to renew this while I am in Nairobi. Can someone point me in the right direction to get the ball rolling?

Times Tower on Haile Selaisse Avenue in central Nairobi. Probably best to ask Chris at Jungle Junction to get his driver to take you there. You will probably have to pay for the expired time as well as a new one. If you go on to the South African overlanders forum 4x4 Community forum (just Google it) and go on to the overland section Kenya, you are likely to find the GPS coordinates and all the information you need.

Beware of going there by yourself - it's practically run by the local equivalent of the Mafia. Get someone local you can trust and who understands not only the process but also how much you should be paying. Ask Chris, or see Charlie who operates the Wildebeest Camp taxi service - we went with him and the price plummeted from $300 to $40 when he got his friend who works there involved. We paid him for a whole day, gave him a handsome tip and were still massively better off!

Thanks for the replies. I went to Times Towers myself and was pleasantly surprised. I was eventually directed to the correct desk (the 'Enforcement' desk) and spoke to a very nice lady who actually forgave the unpaid tax from when the previous permit expired up to the current date. I paid $40 dollars at the National Bank on the premises for a one month extension. No other fee was asked for.

Total time spent at Times Towers was less than 4 hours and the most time waiting was in the queue for the bank. If you can get in there as soon as the doors open and lines start forming I could see huge time savings. I was directed to a wrong queue which wasted 30 minutes. After you get approval from the Enforcement desk, go to counter 4 downstairs (its actually clearly labeled 'Foreign Import).

I had all the documentations on hand and the two most important are the carnet (take 2 photocopies, in case one gets ruined) and the expired permit as this will be stamped with the extension period on it.

Once you have the payment slip from the bank you then have to go to Upper Hill to Hill Park Plaza to the NTSA headquarters to collect the new permit.

Actually the whole process was pretty straight forward. Don't carry a camera into Times Towers as it will be confiscated and you'll have to go through the process of documenting it with security. Phones with cameras are overlooked...

In my opinion a fixer is not required. YMMV.

You used to collect your permit at the booth where you paid for it obviously things change...have you heard any news about getting a PIN without an Alien's ID?

The aliens registration is only needed if you have a work permit for Kenya. With the work permit, you will be able to get a PIN for the Kenya Revenue Authority. This post was about having a foreign vehicle in Kenya on a temporary basis for tourism.

Having lived and worked in Nairobi I know. However, many foreign visitors I know have wanted to buy a vehicle in Kenya and since the rules re: the KRA PIN have changed, they haven't been able to. Just thought someone might have some news.

Yes, for one to purchase a motor vehicle or motorcycle a must you have a KRA PIN certificate. To get a pin certificate is a process which is not cumbersome. you only needs your Passport and any other important travel document that you have, sometimes they might ask for introduction letter from a tax agent.
