Selling a vehicle in Mali
As the original thread was closed due to handbags at dawn I thought I'd add my experiences. Please note that this all happened in 2006 so things may have changed.
We crossed from Mauritania into Mali and the car was definitely stamped into my passport. We sold the car in Bamako and were pulled by customs while trying to fly out. We told him the car had been taken on by a friend who was continuing south. After much shaking of heads and my French suddenly deteriorating he let us go. But I think he knew.....
There is a form available from customs which you can use if you need to leave a car in the country temporarily or if the car has been scrapped. If you leave it at a hotel the hotel owner can sign it.
The car we sold was RHD, petrol and not the usual type of car for that part of the world (a 1988 Fiesta) but it still fetched 600 Euros and we had people asking if the car was for sale almost immediately after arriving at our hotel. One of the people wanting to but it was a customs officer.....A RHD Mercedes 190D went for around 1700 Euros.
