Temporary import into Ghana : Cost
Hello,
I am considering driving my french registered 1989 Peugeot 205 further east from ABJ.
I do not have a carnet and was wondering if someone has an idea of the cost involved with a temporary import into Ghana ?

Well with Ghana its quite a complicated question, the rule is you need a Carnet for sure , but then and again you could try and speak to the officers involved and they might let you in with a temporary import bond from one of the Local insurance companies, this can only be arranged through an agent of which there is always plenty on the border for a fee of course. you'll have to be patient and explain . I got through with a Togo registered car 4 months ago but then and again they have different rules for cars from the ECOWAS sub region which only cost me 50 Ghana Cedi.(approx £10) Also if you plead your case with the customs officers they might also just make the paperwork for ECOWAS for you, or ask for a deposit, just persevere and be patient, it might take a few hours but it can be done. Let us know how you get on. i'll be doing it again in the next few months from London and don't plan on getting a Carnet as the car is not worth that much. oh should in case you need the definition for ECOWAS , its the Economic Community for West African States

Check the following link for a recollection of my experience entering Ghana on a motorcycle without a carnet about a year ago. See number 10 a bit down the list.

I would advise you to enter at a large border crossing. I tried a small crossing first but they were not set up to their internal computer system so I had to try a different border crossing.

Hey man, just thinking - I don't have a carnet either and I'm wanting to go through Ghana. I have a problem as I have to fly back to Europe from Ghana for a couple of weeks. Would they let me fly out while my bike is still in the country? I would have a return ticket... maybe I could leave it in a customs compound while I'm gone or something

Hi,
I don't know how this works. If you would be leaving Ghana at a small land border it would probably not be a problem as they most likely would not be connected to their own internal system but in your case, leaving by plane, you will leave at the most sofisticated border in the country and they will have your bike on record as the TIP will be registered digitally on their system. I would definitely advice you to ask customs for advice beforehand.
Also, ask about it when you enter the country. If you talk to a border officer with some intelligence you may ask him what to do and who to contact.
I asked about doing a detour into Ivory Coast and then return to Ghana and I was told to hold on to my TIP at the first exit which was accepted by the border officials. I then used the same TIP for my second entry. I would be surprised if there would be any major difficulties. But you never know, it's Africa.

Bonjour,
Did drive from Ivoiry Coast to Togo without a carnet.
Had to do a Temporary Import in Elubo valid for 3 months.
It took time, 3 days, and money for the custom broker.
It was valid for 3 months and I was able to leave the car in Ghana while flying back to Europe. No problem.
The exit in Aflao was long as well, 2 days, because of a computer issue. Thanks god I was staying in Lome and dealt with it from there.

Could you tell me how much it cost you? I have yet to decide whether to cross into Ghana from Ivory Coast on a KTM 1190 Adventure R. I don't really have 3 days to waste at a border either... any suggestions?
