TVIP duration for South Africa? Storage in Cape town?

Hi all,
I'm in Buenos Aires about to ship my bike to Cape Town. However, I don't plan to go to Cape Town myself for maybe up to 1 year and therefore I need to know would the importation document TVIP last that long? I don't have a Carnet nor plan on getting one

Also I'm wondering if anybody might be willing to store my bike in Cape town. It is an old Kawasaki KLR650 2003. Any assistance much appreciated.
kind regards
Declan

Woodstock Moto Co and The KLR Clan could be good options to explore.

Declan. Impressive that you can ship from BA to South Africa without a carnet. I was told it was a requirement of shipping. Regards Simon

Yes, that was what I heard too. Only applies to entry by ship though

Might have changed

Hi Declan try Duncan @ African Overlanders. He can store your bike and could probably help you with information on TIP.

Thanks Stephen and thanks to all. In the end I used a commercial receiver in Cape Town to get the bike through Customs. It went by air and is now at their premises. Their cost was about €240 - not bad at all and €19 per month for storage - also very reasonable I think.

Simon, I was told to look up gumtree or other and to provide 3 differing quotes for the value of my 2003 klr and that Customs would charge 25% of the highest quote, refundable on exit in lieu of a carnet. I'm not sure of the duration allowed but I think I heard 2 years. Nor am I sure if this arrangement is exclusive to air or ship.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
