We want to buy a 4x4 in South Africa in August
Does anyone have advice where to buy a 4x4 in South Africa - reliable traders, good private sales ads. How long does it take to arrange the paperwork? We are looking for a vehicle in the region of R25,000 - R40,000.
We will be flying to J'burg, S.A at the end of August and will be travelling up to Tanzania before returning to S.A in December where we then hope to sell the vehicle.
ALso, does anyone know if it is possible to enter Tanzania with a S.A registered car on a Temporary Import Permit (Laissaz Faire) as we are keen to avoid getting a carnet de passage.
Grateful for any advice

4x4 wanted in South Africa
Hi, My name's Allan, I run a 4wd training school in East London, South Africa. You'll be lucky to find a reliable 4x4 for R 40 000 or less in South Africa, an old Hilux single cab might be what you are looking for. Try autotrader.co.za, but it's a real buyer beware situation, I've been caught buying from this source once before.
If you're serious, contact me via p.m. at 4wd@mweb.co.za, I will try to find you a vehicle here in East London that I can at least look at for you and give you an opinion on. A friend of mine has a Land Rover 130 he wants to sell, but that would be about R 85000.
Difficult call.

Hi,
From Gauteng here in South Africa, I think it will be a challange to find a reliable 4x4 for R40,000. Sometimes my eye catches a small old Suzuki 4x4 (only because I also have one) for sale and even the mid 1980 models which have seen much better days will go for close to R40,000.
I think the best would be to be in contact with 4x4 organisations/schools/ clubs as they will be the best to know about a 'good' available 4x4 that might be within your budget.
Have fun

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
