Dr650 2Up Seat

Hi all, I realise that theres already been a lot said about how the DR isn't suited to long distance touring 2 up due to comfort. My wife and I are planning on doing a 6month-1year trip of South America and for many reasons the DR is my first choice.

My question is with regards to lengthening the seat, but first please see the following link.. https://advrider.com/f/threads/phreaky- ... ld.617031/ . I really like what this guys done, your thoughts would be appreciated.

Will this 75mm extra length sort out the issue? We are both short and light at 70kg each (155pounds). I'm willing to do anything to DR to make it comfy for 2up! We haven't yet bought the bike until we're sure this wont be an issue. Ive attached an image of a very interesting looking seat on another DR as well, any thoughts and input would be appreciated! Thanks

I've never gone 2 up on my DR650, so I won't be much help.

Are you concerned about putting a passenger's weight behind the rear axle? I would be careful about this, it could introduce handling problems with a light front end.

Something else to think about is the placement of the passenger foot pegs.
A longer seat may allow your passenger to have more room, but the reach to the footpegs could be awkward.

One of the reasons my wife and I don't go 2 up on my DR is that my passenger pegs ride very closely to the front of the panniers- no room to get more than her heel on the peg. Uncomfortable and insecure.

I love my DR but 2 up I would look more at a KLR650 or the DL650.

I also have a DL650 which is a great, reliable travel bike for 2 up, but not as dirt worthy, in my opinion.



We will ride dirt roads but when it gets rocky or muddy, the bike is too big and vulnerable to damage. For more dirt, I would be looking at the KLR.

I rode a DR to S. America and met my wife there. We rode from Santiago to Mendoza and back 2 up with a Sargent seat and a large GV top case. It can be done but it is very uncomfortable. This seat of yours may work but you never know until you try it. Take a 4 day trip in the US with at least one 8 hour day to check it out first.

Don't be put off by people telling you that you 'can't ride a DR650 2up around South America'

Yes a V Strom will be much more comfortable, but if you are both physically not too big then you can get away with a DR
We spent 5 months on the road and 22000 km 2up. We used a Corbin seat and Lisa had an Airhawk inflatable cushion strapped onto the back behind the seat which she found reasonably comfortable, lower the rear foot pegs, job done, the DR handles fine 2 up with luggage, using a 14 tooth front sprocket helps you not slip the clutch too much with the extra weight. Im 190lbs, 5'10", Lisa is 120lbs and 5'6"
