I don't know about the drill & tap, but this thread is about the capabilities of the liquid stuff:-

Not sure, but I believe magnesium is the metal. Have you tried JB Weld?

The clutch, generator and cam covers are magnesium. The rest of the engine block and casings are aluminium.

Very soft Magnesium.
If you go over to the Thumper Talk site and go to the Store, they sell a very
effective Alu cover/guard for the DRZ....maybe by now for both sides.

Guys have plugged holes on the trail with GUM...also...Quik Aluminum works well too. It is sandable and drilable...very tough.

Devcon is the best stuff .. comes in different types ... Pricy .. and does not sit on the shelf for ever. If you have some .. it will last longer sitting in the fridge.

The cheaper stuff may do the job too .. just saying what is best.

thanks everyone , i now believe that the casing im fixing will be the actual crank case made of alumium. part of a bolt hole/mounting for a small kick start bracket has broken so i may be able to drill the hole a little deeper then re-tap and build up with something fairly cheap like JB weld before i by Devcon or similar.
i pick the bike up at weekend so i will post how it goes.

Hi peachface, any updates?

I have the same problem. Some time ago I made a mistake when installing kick-start and ruined the stopper bolt hole (plus I also got a hole in the outer case). I have fixed the outer hole with chemical metal and it is holding OK and now thinking about trying to install kick-start again and fix the stopper bolt hole.
