Gulatech tank insert fuel filters
Has anyone tried one of the tank insert fuel filters? I see Gulatech make these and they sound like good insurance as a pre fuel system filter. I intent to try one and then remove the filter once back in the UK after a trip to Africa, cut it open and see what is in there.

I recognized a positive feedback to these fuel filters in several videos/blogs in the past. Mostly by people who run first into trouble with bad fuel and than installed them to prevent. Personally its on my list for outfitting my next travel bike.

It`s simple but effective technology based on microfiltering through different layers of monolayer micromesh.

Yes, I have one in my 790. As far as I can see it's a good filter, and I'll definitely be keeping it for my central Asian trip next year. However if I was only driving in Europe I probably wouldn't bother. For one thing the fuel is always reasonably clean, and for another it makes filling a rather slow process.

The reason for this is that as you add fuel, air needs to come out of the tank. It has to flow out through the filter and as you get near the top this means passing through a reducing area of (wet) filter. This causes a lot of fuel bubbling and foaming in the filler neck, so getting the last couple of litres in takes longer than the previous 18. That's not a big problem if you don't mind underfilling the tank, but if you're doing a long distance to the next gas stop you want the tank brimmed.

Good feedback Tomkat. The filling and particularly the venting is something that sounds logical now you have pointed it out and not something that I had considered. So thank you and I now know what to expect when using these filters.

Like Rapax says, not needed for Europe but it will be something worthwhile fitting prior to departure further afield.

Also heard that some people use a mr Funnel. Probably more work, since you have to pull it out every time you fill up tho. Upside being that it also removes water.

I think too that a Mr Funnel is the better choice - where the fuel really need filtration.

Which a Mr Funnel Filter I was able to do a transafrica even with a brand new Euro4 based vehicle - without trouble: Me 9 years ago:



They are available in smaller sizes for bikers! I strongly suggest to use an bag for it, also when gasoline dont stinks similar to diesel. Found this in australia - guess it would be cheaper to do it by yourself than paying the shipping fee from australia:



You can guess - that it was hard to topup 200L Diesel that way

Not sure that is a practical solution for a motorcycle, just adding something else to carry.

Just a warning. Great product but extremely poor customer service and incredibly expensive "postage" charges. They refuse to use anything other than FedEx and wanting almost E60, more than the filter itself, for "postage" on something no bigger than a ladies handkerchief I feel is exorbitant. If you even politely try and discuss it with them they'll blame it on your location and tell you they'll just cancel your order instead.
