Help - "box-head" screws for XR carb?
Hi all!
I had some miserable times with my carb in South America simply because I couldn't get off the float-bowl screws. Someone suggested I replace them with 'box heads' so I can use an alan key to remove them - this sounded like a good idea. Does anyone know how I can go about this? Are these hex/box head screws available in BQ, etc? My bike's in S.America but I brought back one of the screws to size it or are these screws pretty universal?
Any ideas would be great,
Best wishes,
Ross

I presume you mean socket head screws if you want to use an allen key to remove them. They will be available from Ebay, get someone with mechanical or engineering knowledge to measure it for you and order some, you might have to buy 10 at a time but this will not cost much.

Yes, Universal! You need common stainless, metric Allen (AKA hex head) head bolts for your carb. The ones on there stock are NOT MEANT TO COME OFF ... and that is why you had so much trouble!
Honda most likely uses RED (permanent) Loc tite on them. In the USA, it's LAW that access to carb be restricted, probably in S. America too now.
An Impact Driver tool is best for removal of such stubborn Phillips bolts (JIS actually) ... for your info, guys have ruined the carb trying to remove these carb bolts improperly. (cracked Carb body)
Use your stock bolt to match to Allen headed stainless one of correct size, length and thread pitch! EASY! If local hardware stores don't stock one, go to bike forums and vendors who do Carb kits. But should be readily available everywhere, even in Chile.
This is a common upgrade to most carb bikes, really easy fix. Use quality stainless bolts and a LIGHT coating of Blue Loc tite once you're sure you're jetting is good for a while.
Good luck!
