Painting an Acerbis tank

Hi all. I've recently installed a long range tank on my TTR600, but annoyingly could only get it in white. After asking around and forum trawling it became apparent that these tanks cant be painted with success due to the kind of plastic they're made of. I decided on another plan, and got the tank sprayed with Rhino-coat, the stuff they spray in the back of utes/bakkies/pick-ups to keep the back bin from getting scratched. Its chemical proof and flexible and I think its great. Anyone else seen or done this before? Painting an Acerbis tank-dsc03378.jpg

I've seen hand painted Acerbis tanks as well as spray painted. They don't look too pretty but the paint sticks for a time. Long enough no doubt..

I don't know much about paint and painting but you can add stuff to paint which makes it more flexible which stops it separating.

You would probably have to get a primer first too.

If you don't care too much about aesthetics then give it a go...

Why not !!

Keep an eye on it. Petrol vapours are carried through the walls of those tanks from the inside to the outside.

There's a thread with info, not entirely applicable to your coating, here:

I wouldn't be that keen, after having an acerbis tank that had been painted shatter after a small drop onto the floor, I think it may affect the tank in ways that aren't fully understood.
My Acerbis tank has a sticker on it:

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
