RD07 Afric Twin stopped running
Good afternoon all.

New here and looking for some much needed help.

I've had my 1994 RD07 Africa Twin for about a year now and it hasn't skipped a beat and quite frankly is the best and most pleasurable bike I've ever owned. Until my journey to work on friday.

I approached a set of lights which changed to red so I rolled off the throttle and glided to a halt at the line where she cut out. Much smoother than a stall, she simply stopped running and hasn't started up since.

I checked all fuses which are fine. The starter relay works, there is plenty of fuel, i have compression and the starter turns nicely on the press of the button.

My thoughts are perhaps the fuel pump given it's age or perhaps a blocked jet?

Wondered if anyone else has come across this before and if so what the remedie would be?

While looking at the price of a replacement fuel pump I came across a fuel pump points repair kits. Does anybody have any knowledge of these or their reliability/functionality?

Given it has compression then as you suggest its either fuel or ignition.

When you cranked it over to do the compression check did you have the throttle wide open? If so did you smell fuel?

If no fuel smell then I reckon you nailed it on the pump. I would suggest treat your faithful pony to a new one.

Check for spark?

People with failed fuel pumps can run if the fuel tank level is above the carby - bypass the fuel pump and keep the tank fuel level high.

I have thought about pressurising the tank with air - use your tire repair pump and the tank air breather line .. would need a schrader valve off an old tube ..

You did not say if you are getting spark? If so ignor next line..
Check you CDI tiny crack can happen causing a shut down as described.

If it is the fuel pump the standard fix is to get a facet pump from the likes of rugged roads and fit and forget. The AT pump were simply rotten so rebuilding will just mean repeat performance one day...

My AT has just hit 290k km and my facet is still perfect...

update
Thanks all for the advice.

I removed the fuel pump yesterday to double check it. The circuit was still intact so i applied a separate power source and the pump came back to life. It chucked out a gulp of fuel and throbbed away quite nicely. I also double checked power on the bike to the connector and power was still present so i reconnected the pump to the bike and plumbed everything back together- The bike is now running again just as it did before.

My only assumption is that there may have been a blockage that the bikes battery wasn't strong enough to clear (while simultaneously turning the starter motor over) and the external power supply concentrated solely on the pump may have pushed it through?

This being said i will be draining the fuel tank and replacing the fuel filter over the bank holiday weekend as a precaution and will also be testing the battery and alternator for piece of mind. After that a long ride on a short loop around the village to make sure it was just a blip (and not too far to push her home should it happen again).

Take out a spark plug after a failed start atemped. If its wet there is petrol of not there is non. Hold the spark plug against the engine while starting to see if there are sparks comming. If there are there is no prtrol if not its an electrical problem.



You can also pull of the tube of the carborator to chep if petrol is comming. If petrol is comming to the carborator but not out of it clean the jets inside. After 22 Jears everyday use i recently hat the same problem. After 30 Minutes she is running like new again

Edit: I just read that you found the problem allready. Great! Yes it sounds like a little dirt or that the pump is about to die slowly. I would replace it just in case. Its a known issue after 23 Years http://www.ebay.de/itm/Benzinpumpe-K...4AAOSwIclZhzNf
