That would make for a delightful trip.

I have always enjoyed riding through Portugal. It's not too crowded, and the smaller roads - the secondary roads - are delightful. It's also a pretty inexpensive country to spend time in.

Sorry to rain on the parade but it won't be going ahead soon. Brittany Ferries have issued a statement:

https://brittanyferriesnewsroom.com/as-spain-gears-up-to-welcome-tourists-plan-for-new-porto-route-is-shelved-for-now/

Whilst it is disappointing my reading of the press release is that they may consider such a route at some point - logistics in the short term prevented it happening but it could happen...

I must admit to being surprised when it was announced / floated anyway. The ferries to Spain have been financially dubious for a while so an even longer haul to Portugal must make even less sense. If it was simply a Covid workaround surely someone in management must have worked out it would take longer to set the service up than the restrictions were likely to last.

To be fair a plan for ferries that don't float was never going to be popular........

I was impressed that they were so open as to the thinking behind the decision to not go forward.

I did not know that the Spanish routes were uneconomic - you live and learn.

Don't take my word for this stuff (or much at all, my kids tell me) - it's about as unreliable as the ferries

I do seem to remember there being talk of scrapping them some years back as they were losing money.

Hi Jay:

There must be something unusual about the demographic of passengers on the UK to Spain ferry route. I looked into taking a ferry on that route a couple of years ago, and all that was available was a "no frills" ferry - no bedrooms, restaurant, etc., just sit in the seats and wait for over 24 hours.

Might be that a lot of the people travelling on that route are doing so with camper vans, or they are tenting, or maybe they are just poor.
