Carnet de Passages

A question for the motor cyclists in the group.

I am applying for a Carnet de Passages for a Triumph tiger 800 XC motorcycle from 2014. On this bike, as on a lot of other bikes there is no engine number. I have been in contact with the ADAC in Germany, the issuing organization and they said that I had to fill a number in.

In some countries in South America they filled the vin number in that box, when issuing a TIP.

The Carnet is for Africa.

Does anyone have any actual experience with this.

I have also posted this in Trip Paperwork and on the Facebook site.

Many thanks Vince

Problem solved with a lot of help from HU on facebook. I have found the engine number, it was well hidden and nearly impossible to read. So mall paper work is now gonna be Okay. Thanks everyone

The only country that actually checked the vin number on my bike on a trip up through East Africa was in Egypt and I don't remember them checking the engine number, at all other border crossings they just stamped it without even looking at the bike.
If they insist on an engine number I would put the vin number in the box, many bikes share the same number anyway.

Thank you Mark. That is what I done in some other countries, entered the vin number.

I have also just discovered, via the facebook group, that there is an engine number on the tiger. But it's hidden onder the frame. Gonna check it out.

Thanks for the reply Mark.

Hi Vince,

I had a carnet and used it in the lower six countries in southern Africa.

They didn’t all check it but one or two did. Mine was also very hard to find so I too asked the net and found it, then photographed it and kept the images on my phone.
When someone wanted to see the number zi showed them where to find it and showed my pic.

That was in 2007 from the RAC who do not issue them anymore, I believe there is a thread about carnet for UK vehicles in the trip paperwork section.

I would always be religious about getting the RIGHT numbers, ion Egypt they took rubbings of our engine and frame (VIN) numbers and compared them against the paperwork - twice, and each time SEVERAL men did the compare. We also saw the huge parking lot where vehicles whose paperwork didn't match were now stored until sold, as confiscated smuggled goods.
Your dealer will ALWAYS know where the engine and frame numbers are - don't take a chance, get it right, it only takes a few minutes. A photo of each is good to have too.
