Help! Giving talks/presentations about your trips
Hi
I've been invited by some local groups/organisations to give some talks...
Can anyone offer any advice on
how to keep an audience captivated,
how to focus on what to talk about
how not to go on and on about the same thing
how to target different audiences
what kind of pics to show, how many etc?
And any other advice you may have?
Thanking you
Fern

Your presentation should last about 30 seconds
Just tell them to get out of their armchair and go find out for themselves!:

Help! Giving talks/presentations about your trips
Try googling 'how to write a good speech' for a wedding, etc and adapt it. Same premise really. Maybe start with a good anecdote about a testing time, etc, straight into the action or start with a question ie 'what happens when you run out of gas in [insert remote region here], etc. Whatever you do avoid a linear account of your trip ie I started here and finished there. Google tips on public speaking and voice projection. Practice in the mirror and on sympathetic friends and family

Fern. I'm a presentations trainer. What I can tell you is that you are a much better presenter when you focus less on yourself and more on your audience. Why are they taking the time to listen to you? Everything you talk about should be what they want to hear. Do some research. Let me know if you have any specific concerns.

There's a great short book on how to deliver a TED style talk. I use a lot of the techniques when presenting myself.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
