She´s definately an awesome chick. Several years ago I sought out Austin to get some info for a trip I planned. I hadn´t heard of Horizons yet, so I thought it was a good idea. Immediately they offered to cook us dinner. She took my comments about travelling vegies very well, not knowing I just ate a vegie dinner cooked by a vegy. Bit embarrassed about that still. Hope there is no grutch. I put my foot in it a lot.

As for Charlie, best thing ever happened to him was having his arse kicked by a straight forward Aussie. He was good on his Dakar project. Still get annoyed every time I see that bit in LWR where he finds out that he´s not getting a free KTM and spits the dummy. Like he and his millionair mate can´t buy one outright.
Also get annoyed by E when he can´t compete on LWD with C´s riding skills and winges something like: don´t really like riding on dirt, don´t really like fast.... and you just wan´t to finish it for him.

Charley and Ewan come accross as nice guys on the telly (LWR & LWD). Their trips were done for the telly and I think give the impression to a lot of people that it is the only way it can be done. I don't think they can be criticised for not being sufficiently 'hardcore' as individuals only praised for taking advantage of their celebrity status to get the opportunity to the trips they did (we'll all like someone else to pay us to do the same - wouldn't we). Lois, on the other hand, shows what can be done with a positive attitude and has proved herself very good at writing about it. My wife is my hero and I can think of a few other girlie bikers who I rate higher than Lois but she is in the top 5 or so.

Why do you have to shout all the damned time? It's not like you're saying anything original. Oh, I get it ...

Before I set off on my RTW that I'm on I researched as much material as I could, videos, books, this site, etc and have watched both LWD and LWR and also read both of Lois's books finding them a great read,
I have much more admiration for Lois, on her own, single female et al but there's times when I'd love to have the support crew and all the other gubbins that Ewan and Charley had. Having knackered piston rings, a buggered rear shock and a burned out starter motor, I'd have killed to get a crew in to deal with them but alas no! There's not even a garage here that's seen a bike bigger than a 250 never mind my XT 600. So in a hotel carpark in the Congo I changed the rings, shock and cleaned up the starter motor and feel bloody great for not only doing it but doing it myself, even if the hotel manager was going nuts over spilled oil on his floor! I'm not blowing my own trumpet but the sense of independence (and relief!) as to getting on with it on your own is great.
She's a great and very brave woman for doing what she loves and I've taken inspiration from her and am having a ball but if the opportunity had come before to have a 'freebie' then would I have taken it? Bloody too right! ha ha ha!


To anyone else that's thinking about a trip the only support crew I have is friends back home for parts, a manual, internet occasionally and DHL.

I'm off to order order another Mojito.
