I looked at Eaglerider (and a bunch of others) back at the start of the year but no sign of discounts then and the regular rental price for our upcoming 6-7 week trip made it a non starter.
We ended up buying a US bike on the basis that whatever we lost on selling it would be considerably less than the hire charge. In fact, if we did / do two similar length trips, we could just chuck the bike away afterwards as the rental costs would be the same as the purchase price.
Had that hire deal been available I suspect we'd have gone with it and just headed further south.

How did you buy a bike with no fixed abode in USA ? I'd heard that to buy and insure was hard to do now without an address.
It is a great deal they're doing .. "winter rental sale".

We have friends living there so it was all done in their name. All I did was send loads of money. I've yet to see what my cash bought but we're going over there in about a month to start the trip so I hope it starts
It'll be interesting to see how it works out - I'll be on a New Jersey plated bike that's registered to, and insured by, someone else, with a UK driving licence and an Irish passport (UK one runs out mid trip). Very pick and mix.
When we finish the trip (late Oct prob) I've got the choice of either selling it to get as much money back as I can, leaving it there and possibly doing another trip next year - Canada / Mexico perhaps, or bringing it back to the UK (hassle but just about financially worth it and my wife is already talking about eastern Europe next year).
When we looked at rental (last winter) the prices were off the scale ($200 / day for 40 days min). Our friends tried a few dealers in the NJ / NY area to see if any of them would consider a sell / buyback deal but none of them would so buying privately was the only viable option - I don't have anything suitable here that I could ship over.
Our route is (roughly) head west in Sept on a southerly route and come back east in Oct on a northerly route. Unless the weather changes our mind - in which case it'll be back east on an even more southerly route.

I've got some friends from Oz in USA at present ... been there three months and they got Eagle Rider down to $50 a day for that rental.
That's handy knowing about residents, got a mate in North Carolina and some friends in Virginia I could maybe do similar with. Thanks

Roynie and I bought bikes in Massachusetts using a friend's address back in 2001. We had no problems registering it or insuring it ... but, in terms of vehicle purchase (and lots of other everyday things), you have to bear in mind that 'The States' is actually 50 different countries, each with their own particular laws. So, what goes in one State, may not be legal in the next.

They do the same every year after summer to send the bikes back to the west coast. I think you have 3-4 weeks and fixed pick up and drop off point.
