I've lived on the west coast my whole life, never heard of this. There are plenty of military bases...most you can't set foot in, some you can drive through,
never seen camping. The best one I know of is Fort Hunter-Liggett. Ferguson-Nacimiento rd. is a five star elevator ride over Big Sur. It goes from Highway One up and over the mountain and into the base. From there you go to 101. World Class.Camping everywhere in Big Sur area.
If you're looking for some other camp sites I know one or two good areas to look. Lots of Wild Camping is possible too. Do be aware we have a fair number of Cougars and Bear. Mostly they will not bother you....but just a head's up.
Tell me the areas you might stop in and I'll pull out the maps and have a look.
You must see the Trinity Alps area and The Lost Coast....best of California....and please keep these places to yourself. These are our treasures.

Amen! and when you go to the Trinity Alps, be sure to stop at Happy Camp and inivite a bunch of friends to go fishing. And don't neglect the Marble Mtns. My goodness--you can catch more fish than you can carry out. but don't tell anyone else.

If you Google this you will find many sites under control of the Army Corp. Most of this has to due with river control, so their recreation and camping opportunities will be pretty good.
There's lots of free camping available in the USA, with BLM and USFS managing the largest tracks.
Scaling down from those would be State Lands and Parks, and then you're into City Parks, with many of the smaller 'cities' making free camping avalable.
With discretion and common sense (subjective), you can travel around the USA and camp free.

Have you checked the Euro to Dollar exchange rate lately? I can't afford the EU myself.

Exactly! If you can't afford to live in the UK....better get over here. Its NEVER been cheaper for those with pounds or Euros. Pretty much like a 3rd world country for you guys. Dollar is way way down....all to your benefit.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
