Air Freight Motorcycle into Buenos Aires

We are in the final planning stages of our adventure around South America. We intend to fly our bike into Buenos Aires.

Has anyone done this recently, that can give us some info on costs at Customs clearance, and whether it is possible to do it yourself.

Webpages are not helpful, and there doesn't seem to be anything recent here on HUBB. I have been told that Airport arrivals get special treatment for X-ray and drugs searches, and that fees for that alone could be US$1200.

Any info much appreciated.

Here's my understanding, based largely on recent reports here: fees in B.A. have gotten very expensive, hence people usually ship into Chile or sometimes Uruguay. If determined to go to B.A., the former is two days hard riding away, the latter a half-day ferry.

If I wanted to find out more about airfreighting into B.A., I'd try to contact everyone's favorites Javier and Sandra at Dakar Motos.

As of 18 months ago, flying into BA would cost minimum US$800 per bike - and they had to be in seperate crates (our DR650s left Aus in a single crate). Going into Uruguay was US$900.
So we redirected to Santiago de Chile, where clearance cost US$40 and took about an hour. Just be sure to have plenty of copies of your documents! And siesta is taken very seriously in the air-fright customs-clearance business... Also, the nearest fuel station was then about 4km away and a nightmare of roadworks to reach.
The warehouse guys were happy to dispose of our custom-made steel shipping crate and were incredibly helpful - typical of Chileans generally, we found!

Thanks for that. Info we got from BA customs agent was US$1200, but I can't get that confirmed. Looking forward to Chile, eventually

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
