Perhaps they're going the route of China, where you need to rent/purchase a bike in the country, or ride in with a Chinese registered bike?

In the past, the SE Asian registered bikes have had problems entering Laos, I haven't heard too many people not being able to get their bikes in if they are registered outside of SE Asia. The Friendship bridge near Vientiane can open and close sporadically, but most folks go to the next border crossing to enter if this crossing is closed. A carnet will make it even easier to enter Laos.
Laos has been very inconsistent in their border crossing policies in the past, so only time will tell what happens here. The information in this thread may only apply to the Friendship bridge also.

Ive arrived in thailand about a week ago. I was planning on spending a whole month here traveling around. Since hearing this im making a slow-ish bee line to the boarder. That way if i cannot get in to Laos, i then can head for the cambodian boarder (Due to the tempory import of my motorbike)....im going to be pretty sad if this is the case. Laos is a beauitiful country with beauitiful people. But I am also sad that i have to cut my time in thailand, as i wish i could have seen more.
if any one has any news on the this board please let me know.

Please keep us updated!
My wife and I just arrived in Bangkok as well, ready to head north to Laos. Anyone with information about getting in, it will be most appreciated. We do have a carnet so that is good.

border crossing
Hi there,
I crossed from Thailand into Laos at the golden triangle across the mekong river by ferry last oct, on the Laos side I was never asked for any bike paperwork or anything else, in fact I had to ride around this little town in Loas looking for the border control to get a visa, no one there was even bothered if I got a visa or not, they were more interested in going for a .
I left through the friendship bridge back into Thailand and had no problem whatsoever. My bike is registered in Australia but I could not see any one having any difficulties with any bike from any country, Laos is pretty much a 3rd world country and an amazing place really worth going to, it's the perfect place to ride through and get off the beaten track.
ride on
