My husband and I are (were?) planning a trip during our vacation time. We were thinking September. What we wanted to do was to start from outskirts of Paris then ride through Reims to Luxembourg. Next going south Stuttgart, Bern, Milan, Lyon and Marseille where we planned staying for a few days.
It was supposed to be sightseeing, getting to know our neighbors and tasting the culture.

Do you think such trip is still viable or should be rather stay and ride just around France? We would stay in hotels/motels not tent or camper (we don't have such vehicle). I am aware that it is a long way till September but I am totally clueless as if we should start making preparations or not. Also: food. Should we take, if we go? Or can we eat out?

A good question as I'm wondering the same. After having all my spring / summer travel plans cancelled virally I'm now looking at Sept for a trip to France - roughly from the UK down to the HUBB meeting in Loupiac, then across to a property we have near Grenoble for a while and back. I suppose it depends on how things go with CV-19. If the cases decline and continue to decline then my guess is my plans (and yours) may be possible. If there's another flare up nearer the time things may clamp down again.

I think it is, and if you book your hotels now - far in advance, while everything is uncertain - you can get good deals. Just make sure you make bookings with free cancellation.

Surely one of the pleasures of such a trip is to try the local cuisine. If you stay in AirBNBs or private rooms in hostels that have a kitchen, you can go to the local supermarket and try local produce. Certainly no point bringing food from home.

I think it will all depend on when they lift the 100km limit on travel from your home address.
It’s looking like some accommodation will reopen in time for the French National summer holidays, so September may well be ok. It’s just what is the French government going to to about quarantine rules that might be a barrier to cross border travel that soon.

Vacation in Europe - sounds like you’re coming from America.
This may be a completely different scenario to holiday makers (vacationers) from within Europe ie 14 day quarantine.
You’re asking a question that nobody knows the answer to, I’m afraid, not even Nobel prize winning scientists. If there is a second spike after a relax of shutdown then it’s back to shutdown - no one can predict at this stage.

We have ferries booked from UK - France & Spain to UK at the end of August to 2nd week in September - if we can’t go we’ll take a voucher for next year.

If you’re keen to come this year you could book a flight and make sure it was insured for cancellation. Then if all’s well just come over and play it by ear. We’ve toured all over Europe for the past 26 years and never booked accommodation ahead.
Just look at booking.com or air b&b about 3/4pm or pop into a local tourist office - there’s usually one in every town in a tourist area. Most times, if you start keeping an eye out at around 5/6pm you’ll just drive past a place advertising accommodation (Zimmer in German means room).

Personally, if possible, I would wait a year - you may not get a great experience given the circumstances, which would be a shame as Europe is fantastic.

Don’t prepare, just go where you can - the one country we always go to at the start and finish of our holidays (and sometimes for the whole month) is France and there’s still places we want to see
