Google is your friend. The Caravanistan website was the best source of accurate information pre-covid.
The basic idea is that you apply to the Iranian MFA either directly or through an agent (cheap and easy) for a reference number approving you to visit Iran. You nominate an embassy / consulate where the ministry in Tehran will send your reference number, go there and collect it either on the spot or after waiting a day or two. You can collect it from any embassy / consulate providing you have the reference number sent to that embassy, there are no 'easy / hard / good / bad' places to collect it.
Note that Iran is just on the brink of resuming the issuing of tourist visas after being hit very badly by covid and effectively closing its borders to tourists for 16 months or so. So it remains to be seen in practice what the new norm is, but I fully expect it to be the same.
Disregard any out of date information / nonsense you read on forums about not being allowed a bike with an engine over xxx cc or with a UK license plate. For some reason the topic of entering Iran attracts all kinds of half truths from people spreading rumours which never came to reality. Similarly with stories such as 'I got a visa at the consulate in Erzurum in 2009 with no authorisation number' - this is clearly out of date.
