Swiss cyclists attacked in India
A Swiss couple were cycling to Agra & camping in Madhya Pradesh when they were attacked & robbed. The wife was gang raped and the husband beaten. Truly terrible.
Washington Post
Having just spent 3 1/2 months in India there aren't many spots I'd feel comfortable camping there. Someone will always find you, stare, chat, touch your stuff, touch you & of course sit on your bike whether its benign or not. This is doubly true across the north. I'm not saying they did anything wrong, we'd all love the world to be an open safe place. It's just very sad. Stay safe all.

Thats a really bad story
I hope the victims will find a way to life with what happens.
To try to hide you and your wild camp - or to ask officials for a place to stay when you are not able to find a hidden spot - maybe could help to avoid something like this.
Like i read in several news sections, the victims don`t seems to have done something wrong, they got detected as they enter an small forest - searching for a camp spot. The attackers enters the forest much later.

Except for some very isolated places (of which there aren´t too many left in India) I would not wild-camp in that country. Seems no matter where you stop, there´s always some habitation within a stone throw distance, and they´ll soon know, that you are there. And usually it just leads to curious people coming to look at you, and do nothing. But in this extreme case, it unfortunately turned to something far more serious.
Note, that I´m NOT putting ANY blame to the victims. My only point is, that personally I would not feel comfortable being accompanied by strangers, and being stared at, when I´m on my camp. Some valuable items could also disappear, if you´re not careful, even if most of those people are 100% honest. And very cheap, if rather basic accommodation is to be found almost everywhere in warmer parts of Asia.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
