TIPS while traveling with your cycling equipment
There are many places we can ride, competitions and events we might go on the future so, here are some useful tips for those times you need to travel with your bike equipment:
Pack your bike in a case
It's worth the investment - bike cases will cost anywhere from $50 - $500, if you don't plan on traveling a lot with your bike, get a basic case. Cases examples here
Research transportation services
Getting to and from the airport can be an adventure in itself! If you have a large bike box, it may be helpful to book a private transportation service.
Check baggage requirements
Here is a short list of airlines, and their fees for bringing a bike:
American Airlines - $150
Air Canada - $50
United Airlines - $150

Thanks for the post, christherider.
You might want to specify that your interest is in bicycles, a.k.a. pushbikes, bicicletas, vélos. This forum serves primarily motorcyclists--whose vehicles are also colloquially known as "bikes"--although of course there's lots of overlap and you're totally welcome here.

I would disagree, the best place for valuables is on your person and in your sight.
While the out of sight works to an extent cases merely take a screw driver or pry bar and they are cleaned out.
Do not flash or talk about anything you are carrying, unless it is someone with a need to know.

Hostile Takeover?
Rather than treat christ - he - rider's new thread as a threat, I welcome his suggestion for the safe transport of bicycles.
I have personally interacted with a representative sample of those who read and post here on the HUBB and I have yet to encounter one, with the exception of Bucket1960, who could not figure out that the case "christ" was promoting was for a bicycle and not a motorcycle.
My only problem with the "christ's" post is it smacks of an unabashed advertisement for bicycle cases - for which "fair exchange" is appropriately demanded and should be paid to Grant and Susan, who aside from all their goodness and generosity must finance horizonsunlimited.com. so the rest of us riders can continue to avail ourselves of the best (vehicle) motorcycle, bicycle, 4X4 overland web site ever created.
As one who happily pays to advertise here, christherider, as opposed as he might be to money lenders in the temple, might consider purchasing an ad for his bicycle cases. Here is a marketing tip: simply allude to all the STD's out there - and since the advent of the "mile high club", even transporting your bicycle by air might not be safe without protection.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
