There are the communities which don't specifically offer tent space or put you in contact with a particular member but you can ask if anybody in that community knows of a place you can camp and you might be offered a place or at least guided to a reasonably priced camping site which is local to them.

I guess you are referring to this bit of your reference and it is certainly an interesting development:-
Tent Space Map - ADVrider
It's also interesting how you use the word "overlander" which tends to have a much wider meaning than certain other terminology; in particular, it is often used to mean those who travel using more than 2 wheels. There was quite a bit of discussion in here a while ago about changing the layout of the 4 wheel section, but I don't remember this subject being mentioned.

Here's just one, recent, example of generous ad hoc offers that come along in reponse to particular travel plans:-

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
