Internet in Africa

Hi everyone!
I am travelling from Madrid to Cape Town by motorbike in 6 weeks time: from Tunisia to Egypt and from there to SA following the east african countries. I will be interested in sending some e-mails every 2 or 3 days, what is my best bet?
Will I find Internet facilities in major cities in Africa? If so, where at? In luxurious hotels? What about in difficult countries such as Lybia or Sudan? Is it better to take a laptop and a mobile phone with me (expensive and not very reliable, I believe)?
Thanks for any information
JP

You will find internet cafes in most towns of any size. Easy to find, and inexpensive, just ask around.

Definitely NOT better to take a laptop and cell phone.

Have a great trip, and do keep in touch - send us some of your stories for the newsletter, and let us know your details before you leave!

I am travelling to Marocco next May and I wouldn't mind to have acces to the internet from time to time. But I am not thinking about taking my Ibook with me.

BUT... wouldn't it be possible to start some kind of database in this forum with adresses and places like internetcafé's???
Just like a nice place to stay I can also look forward to getting news from the home-front.
I do realise that this information might be outdated quit fast.

I've tried the website. doesn't seem to work.
I always get a server 404 error.
Has anyone bought the book they are selling? Is worth it, or is it outdated to fast?

Found a better listing of Internet cafes. Check this out: http://www.cybercafe.com/

"This site contains a database of 4209 internet cafes in 148 countries. You can search by city or country name for a list of cafes found in that location, or click on the map below for quick access to regional listings. Listings include location (country, city, address), home page URL, and e-mail address."

I tested it for Libya and Sudan, which were the two countries Juan Pablo originally mentioned. I am happy to report there are 8 internet cafes in Tripoli, including at least one that mentions bilingual staff! And two in Khartoum!

We have changed the link on our Links page to go to this site.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
