I've been debating with Mrs Fox about our wedding rings, They're worth a decent amount of money and in the unlikely event of a mugging or robbery would be quite easy to exchange for cash in most of the world I presume.

No we both agree that the sentimental value attached to these timy bits of metal is very high so they definitey come into the "can't bear to loose category". I am considering buying some low value rings to replace the real wedding rings so during our trip in places where religon is quite important etc we have a visual display of our marriage.

What have other married travelers done about this in the past??

When we're travelling to countries with a considerable percentage of citizens of dubious character we still wear the wedding rings - mostly to "prove" we're actually married and allowed to sleep in the same room...

And instead of portable gold or cash (if any) for bribes (borders, police) we carry a few bottles of really crappy whiskey - which we used on our last trip to bypass a 24hr waiting line at the Ukranian/Russian border.

In my experience you have to be very unlucky to be victim of violent robbery.
But you'll need your rings (at least your wife will in places) so taking a cheap version is a good idea.

I also read somewhere, don't remember where, make sure the rings are loose-fitting. I think you'd have to be really unlucky for that to be an issue. But might as well be prepared.

Otherwise I have very little experience of travelling far with a wedding ring...

Dont worry about it my wife put her engagment ring in the safe but we always wore the wedding rings, not having an expensive watch helps people tend to look at those I had a stainless seico and was asked a few times to give it as a gift LOL but no theft issues.

Enjoy its safer than a night out in Birmingham LOL LOL

I think wearing cheap rings is a good idea......

I don't think you're likely to get mugged for them but they can get lost/damaged etc.

They could fall down an a sink with no grill on it, get scratched and jammed while doing maintenance etc

And if Liz has a pretty diamond, it could get jammed up on something and break off.

And if worst comes to worst, in an accident they might need cutting off. So get looser ones.

This is all being pretty dramatic though.

I'd wear humble cheap rings just so you look humble and cheap !!

I think it would be wise to leave something of such emotional value behind somewhere safe. To be honest, unless you want to I wouldn't worry too much about replacing them with cheap ones (unless you want to of course). I have lived and traveled all over the world with my partner. Most people assume we're married because of our age (40's) but we're not and I don't wear a ring.

In many cultures the presence of a ring does not indicate marriage and by the same token lots of people wear rings when they're not married. Not once, traveling over 20 years together, including in many very conservative societies, have we been questioned.

In Arabic countries, Liz wearing a ring would be a good idea if she went out shopping alone.

Especially in places like Egypt, they'll definitely have a go and flashing a ring is a good way to say "clear off" or "don't disrespect my marriage"..

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
