I think it would be wise to leave something of such emotional value behind somewhere safe. To be honest, unless you want to I wouldn't worry too much about replacing them with cheap ones (unless you want to of course). I have lived and traveled all over the world with my partner. Most people assume we're married because of our age (40's) but we're not and I don't wear a ring.
In many cultures the presence of a ring does not indicate marriage and by the same token lots of people wear rings when they're not married. Not once, traveling over 20 years together, including in many very conservative societies, have we been questioned.
