Unfortunately, I could be out-fished by a bus stop, but its something I'd like to learn. Not as a weekend pursuit, but as something that could help feed us when on long trips.

You see beuatiful lake s and rivers from isolated parts of the world: it seems that catching your dinner could make a nice change from time to time. This could be hgelpful in Trans-Russian trips, even for our planned trip around Europe later this year. Plus a telescopic rod does not take too mucjh room.

So, can anyone say which countries in Europe do not require a fishing licence to pluck a kipper for brekky?

I am not a fisherman but I am pretty certain that you can't fish for Kippers, I think they are someting that is 'smoked'

don't fish myself, but most places in the UK that I've seen seen to require permits. And from what I've heard they can be pretty expensive. It seems to be a private license with the land holder, rather than with the government.

In the UK it's really cheap to fish. You just need to buy a license from the Environment Agency (i used to work for them) it cost maybe £15 a year, not much at all. You can then fish the public rivers, lakes and canals.

Yes, I too would like to fish for my supper, although I have never fished apart from for social reasons.

But my wife did buy me a very small, telescopic fishing rod, similar to the one here

You can fish coastal waters in Scotland without a licence.

By the by, just a wee boast from a newbie fisherman!

I caught a trout on a canoeing trip to Loch Awe last year and it was the tastiest fish I've ever eaten: cooked in foil in the embers of a fire with a wee bit of butter and lemon... half an hour after it had been swimming in the loch! Doesn't get any fresher!
