Spare tyres trans Africa?
Even the hardiest tyres are probably only going to get you 12000 Km’s on a +16000Km trip through Africa.
You’ll only need to change tyres for the last quarter.
Seems a bit much to carry ungainly spares all the way only to change them close to the end. What are the chances of getting tyres when it looks like youre going to need them?
I’m leaving from CapeTown and riding an '83 Tenere.
Anybody?

Hi Bevan
I did my trip in a Land Rover, but hooked up with German couple had new tyres shipped from Germany to Nairobi and we collected them from customs at the airport, which took about one hour to complete the paperwork and pay the import duty.
cheers

Hello. I'm travelling around Africa next year and I'm probably going to take some tyres with me. Just wondering though if going down the West coast of Africa is there tyres available part way down or is SA about the first one? I assume there are a decent range of tyres in SA?
Cheers,
Chris

You can get tires in Nairobi at the KTM shop, but they are seriously expensive.

Yes - Cape Town would be your first place. Other possiblities are Whielock (sp?) Nambia, Togo (KTM dealer) .. and some bike club in Cameroon.. see the Shara and Sub Shara forums? ..
