What if?
What if I am in,say India,there is a death in the family and I need to fly home directly ~ will they let me fly out and leave the bike behind?

I'm assuming you're talking specifically about the Carnet, and countries that require a carnet.

Simple answer - not without violating the carnet.

But since there is no restriction in your passport, as long as you return and exit with the bike within the period allowed on the carnet, there should be no problem.

There are countries that stamp your passport instead of using the carnet, and there is a problem then. With no solution other than begging (unlikely to succeed) or paying or shipping it with you!

Just plan on nothing happening, and deal with it at the time if it does.

Thanks for the swift reply.
In a Carnet-Demanding Country , would they impound the bike as a solution until I returned ?
It seems that some countries are less C-D than others .. could I cross the border into a less C-D Country (or EU) and take a flight?

And I wouldn't trust them to do so even if they said they would. And don't even think about the amount of paperwork it would involve, in countries dedicated to more paperwork, not less, and a procedure that probably doesn't exist... nightmares are made of much less...

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
