I am taking the same route as from middle of March 2014 together with an Argentinian friend. Riding on motorbikes.

But you are going to be way ahead of us if you are leaving mid Jan...

I might be bugging you with some visa and other practical questions on the way ;-)

Safe travels!

Bart

west africa to capetown

Hi to all,
My wife and I have just ridden from the UK to the Gambia on two Enfields and are now looking to travel to Capetown in a couple of months, our main concern is regarding the visas required and if it is possible to get them en-route. We would be covering Senegal - Mali - Burkina Faso -Benin - Nigeria -Cameroon -Gabon -Congo -DRC -Angola - Namibia - South Africa. Time is not an issue with us but it would seem pointless to go further if we can't get the visas. Any info on this would be great.
Thanks in advance
Den and Mandy

i am in the middle of this route and have gotten visas as we go. We're currently on Accra awaiting our Angola visa, then we're hot to trot. The hardest one was Ghana, which we got in Dakar, as you can get a visa valid for 3 years from your home country.

many thanks for this info are there any visas that you can only get in certain countries such as the Angolan as we don't intend to go through Ghana. if you have the time it would be interesting to know where you got yours from, from what I understand Bamako is a place for quite a few.

NB: we were almost turned away at the Benin border this morning. They would only give us a 2 day transit visa after originally telling us that we'd need to return to Lome and get a visa...

West coast to Cape Town

Thanks Jc for the wishes and many thanks to Divelandy for the info on visas some visas we'll have to get different to yours but hopefully all should be ok.
We're currently staying in The Gambia until our daughter comes to visit in Feb then we should be looking at moving on.
Good luck to all.
Den
PS I take it you managed to get through at Benin.

Just made it to Cameroon. No problems in Nigeria, though we were stopped fewer times on a motorcycle than if we were in a car. Lots of "something for me", but no problem when declined.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
