anyone crossing the gap? colombia to panama

hey. we are planning on crossing up to panama in the next 2 or 3 weeks. If there is anyone else with the same plans we should get together. gonna ride northern colombia until a boat leaves. might be able to get a better price if there is more of us.
hope to see you on the road!

got a quote on it, around 500USD per person, 500USD per bike. 5 days sailing including food and water, plus support at customs.
the bad news: we're heading south....

we found a boat 400 each and 375 for the bike, so far have read lots of good reviews on it. Were going with the Melody ( freshaircharters.com ) met the captain the other day and he seem like a strait up guy. will let you know how it goes. When you crossing? if your still in panama when we get there be good to drink something cold with ya. It seems that most people on bikes are heading south.

Sounds like a more reasonable offer.
How long up front should you arrange this shipment you think?
We though of just driving up there and then search for the best deal...

We were almost buying a sailingboat here to do the crossing (and have it sailed by family to Europe, could live on it when we come back ;-))

For sure most drive south, but hey, the Dakar Rally is there within 6 months and you are going to miss that! ;-)

Would be nice to meet, anyhow we can meet somewhere, whether it is Colombia or Mexico or anything in between... Far Away From Flakkee will show us where we are!
We are now near Mexico City, and want to cross Darien somewhere late September.

we just organized it when we got here, there are quite a few boats doing the crossing. I think its pretty hard to plan it in advance. there is lots of info on here about peoples experiences on different boats. The steelrat sounds pretty good and lists their dates on their website. good luck and maby we will cross paths.

guess that everyone wants the same: good food, nice viewus, safe boat and nearly for free....

Perhaps people can post some good deals here?
375 USD/person seems reasonable, but 375USD/bike ....must be possible for less money I would say!

I can only recommend the Stahlratte

I just arrived in Cartegena today, and our sailing trip was FANTASTIC.

$450/per person, $820 if for you and your motorcycle.

Boat is 33meters (100ft) long, 200+ tons, only carries 20 passengers, has more then enough room for everyone, unlimited water, unlimited food, unlimited supply of $1 s and coca cola, $10 bottles of rum, Awesome captain named Ludwig. Plug ins to charge your items all over the boat.

He sails back to Panama on Aug 9th, and if I was going north I wouldn't hesitate to take the ride back again.

It was easily one of the best weeks of my entire traveling experience, and it was worth EVERY PENNY.

Best damn time of my life.

Hi Alex,

Any additional costs, e.g. to get your bike on/off the sailboat?

Greets,
Daan

If you look at the boat's webpage it states there isn't, and I'm pressure sure Alex could confirm this.

They also allow for some of the paperwork and help you with the customs stuff.

There's a charge for the panga on the Panama end--twenty bucks or so.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
