Travelling in Baja
While it is always nice to travel with a partner, the Baja is basically very gringo friendly. In my travels there over the past summer, I had no problems except one attempt at a shake down by police in La Paz. Expect to be stopped at military checkpoints but these are no problem once they realize you are a gringo.
Depending on your bike, you may have to buy gasoline by the bottle in one section in central Baja.
Are you using a GPS? I think I still have the coordinates for the mexican temporary vehicle importation. It is pretty close (1/2 mile) to the I-5 crossing into mexico. the signage is hard to recognise while moving. Have all your original registration documents (they need to see the originals) along with copies. Get mexican insurance at the boder or the AAA in the San Diego area (they deal with a reputable mexican insurance company). You may be able to arrange it through the BCAA, before you go.
I hope this helps smooth the border crossing for you.
Still waiting for my other bike to get out of Africa before I can commit to going to Baja. I am in England at the moment.
Cheers,
Rick
