Capetown to London - September start

I'm a Pom who lives in Sydney, doing a solo Capetown to London starting in September of this year. Will be going up through Namibia, Botswana then heading eastwards and up through Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt and then across to Morocco for the ferry to Spain.

Would love some comany, if anyone's thinking of doing something similar.

Bike is a BMW R1200 GS Adventure.....assuming (praying) I can pick it up in a couple of months' time.

PM me if you'd like to discuss routes etc.

Rob

Well I have found that a couple of months training in gym and a regular routine of situps and jobbing in the morning will allow you to develop sufficient upper body and leg strength and good core stability to be able to pick up that bike. ;-)

Travel time?

Hi Rob,

Just out of curiosity how long are you planning to take? We are heading down through South America starting in summer of 2007 and then flying over to Cape Town in January of 2008 from Buenos Airies. We plan on following a very similar route up Africa and taking about 5 months to get up to Europe.

I guess I better get to the gym too since my 1150 Adventure is about 25 kilos heavier than your new Adventure!

Time for Cape to Cairo plus...

Ekke,

Don't stress about the bike - it's all about technique apparently!!!

I'm looking over my itinerary at the moment and from what I can tell, it looks like about 4 to 5 months would be perfect, with an extra month of contingency planning for meeting people and doing servicing, waiting for parts to be flown in etc!

Of course, the contingency should also allw for being refused visas and having to go the long way around a country (I'm thinking Sudan).

Ironically, if the bike and I are both in good condition when I get to London, I think I'll be shipping to the USA and riding to either Tierra del Fuego or Cape Horn and then shipping back to Sydney. If I do, I'll certainly be in touch!!!

Good luck!

Rob

Thanks Rob

Sounds like we're on about the same wavelength for time required then. I would like to keep up with your travels once you start in September, are posting a blog here on HU?

If you do decide to ship from London to North America I can certainly recommend Air Canada. We flew our bikes from London to Calgary, Alberta using them and it was dead simple.

Have fun!

Air Canadia

Ekke - thanks for that. I'll definitely keep in touch. As I'm doing this trip solo, it'll be important to me to keep in touch with other riders out there.

I've actually got a mate of mine who'll be running a website for me and uploading my daily logs and sat-nav positions etc and I think there'll be a forum as well but I'm sure I'll be visitng HU and ADVRider as much as ever! Silly to miss out on what everyone else is doing really....

Will check the Air Canada guys when I get to London. Part of me wants to avoid the coder parts of North America in Feb/ March as the roads mightbe dangerous but then I know that these times are stunningly beautiful too.

Good luck with your trip - I hope things go your way and that you meet the most amazing people. Hopefully we'll be bale to catch up for a at some point on our respective journeys!

Africa

Hi Rob, I'm in Buenos Aires now, on a RTW with no set route. I've decided to go to Capetown after some more touring here in South America. I should arrive in Capetown in middle July. More as things develop, Dave.
