RTW - US-Russia-Ukraine-Europe-US
Looking for volunteers to join me leaving July early August 2007. I will be starting in Boston. I am thinking the trip can be done in about 10 weeks. I was inspired by Ride Around the World 2005

Leaving for Vlad from Seattle June 2,2007.
Planning to ride Mongolia, K-stan and Turkey and beyond.
Meeting a New Zealander. Others will be there about the same time headed west.
10 weeks-you don't see too much desert.

Bill, thanks for the offer but I cannot make it to Vlad by June 2. Can you tell me if you are following the Trans Siberia Highway from Vlad to Chita before heading into Mongolia? How far west are you traveling before leaving Russia?
Did you arrange for local support upon arrival in Vlad?

Hi Lance,
Are you still planning to go on your trip? Yeah it's possible to do it in 10 weeks. July/Aug is leaving it a bit late but still poissible too. I'm planning the same trip but leaving from the UK. Be good to hear from you.
Regards!

John,
Still planning to go but I do have a project that I must finish before I can leave. If the project schedule slips I will not be going. As you said late July/early August is about as late as the weather would allow in Siberia.
Were you planning to head West to the States and then Russia?
Did your friend have a contact in Vladivostok to help with customs? Did he ship his bike to Vlad by air or sea?
What make/model bike are you going to take?
I have been taking Russian lessons so that I can speak at least a few words. Do you know any?

Lance,
Don't worry about John and his Russian.
He bought me a in Moscow last year.
What more Russian does one need?
It was a KTM then.

Hi Lance,
Thanks for your reply. I don't really know when i will be able to leave at the moment as my mom is quite ill at home. I would leave tomorrow if i could in either direction. My friend last year should have flown from Anchorage to Magadan but with the problems with the airline flew fom Anchorage to Korea then by sea to Vladivostok and cleared Russian customs near there. I have a 950 KTM, not the ideal overland bike i know but nearly all tarmac. As for the Russian, a few words, a phrasebook, a pannier full of vodka and away you go!

PaulM, since I never got to go this year I am now planning for June 08. Are you still planning your trip for April/May 08?

Depature date...
Hey Lance
Departure is still set for May 08 (the 6th) from UK.
Latest plans are Eastern Europe, Ukraine, Russia and up towards Mongolia (a loop of the western edge if time allows) and back through the Stans.
PM me if you're interested.
Cheers
Paul

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
