If you're doing TAT I would recommend getting gpsKevin's tracks and doing it from NYC to Oregon. That is if you want to do it mostly off-pavement, the section from Outer Banks to Ashville has very little dirt. And usually the best time is mid-August early September, it is not unusual to get snow mid September at Colorado high passes and in nothern Nevada, I camped in snow there on September 13.
Before July 4 passes could be still snowed in, and Oklahoma and Mississippi will be hot in summer. Very hot for someone who is used to mild European temperatures. And heat and lack of water could be problematic in Nevada. Plus monsoon is also a consideration, it usually starts in Colorado late July early August
Let me know when you will be going I might do a portion of it with you, if I am back to states by then good luck.
