UK to India & Beyond

Howdy Y'all

I better introduce myself first since I'm a complete N00b here. I'm planning a big getaway adventure when I finish Uni in June, provisionally setting off in early August.

The route so far is:
Europe, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan India

I may then attempt to get to Oz for some circumnavigational fun.

Essentially I'm looking to see if anyone else is planning anything similar and fancies meeting up along the way and providing some advice during planning. The most daunting thing to me is all the paperwork!

Cheers

Duncan

It's not actually that hard, just expensive and time consuming! If you're straight out of uni and on a budget, don't forget a lot of the visa's you need are fairly expensive (Pak, India & Iran) plus you'll need a carnet for your bike based on its value so X your bikes value by 5. There are a 3 ways of dealing with this however as you'll find out here (stump up the cash, security loan and insurance at about 10%). And then allow about £500 to get your bike over to SE Asia.

Its worth bearing in mind that it might be cheaper/simpler to look at Central/South America as you pick up visas at each border, no carnet is required and its all one language! Only downside is the shipping each way (allow about £1500 for this) so many folk buy their bikes in the US and then sell at the end of their trip. Or buy one there off another UK traveller for ease of paperwork etc.

My wife and I are doing the same route, ferry booked for 15 August It's all bike prep at the mo, the carnet is valid for 12 months so not looking to sort that out for a few months, Pakistan visa is valid for 6 months before enty so will start on that next month, Iran only 3 months so that's a job for June.India getting in Pakistan.
We haven't planned a route other than countries, were just going to suck it and see, but planning 6/8 weeks in southern India.
The whole round trip will be 8 months.

Cheers
Pete

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
