Wanting to Join 4WD from Wadi Halfa to Dongola or Khartoum in May/June 2009
Hi, my fiancee wants to come with me on my XT600 from London to Cape Town. I'm concerned about being 2 up on the bike from Wadi Halfa to Dongola because of the sand and corrugations.
Could someone please PM me if she could join your 4WD from Wadi Halfa to Dongola or on to Khartoum? After that, we'd be happy to ride along into Ethiopia if you like?
Cheers
Mike

HI Mike
As the bikes often go on smaller boats/ferries than the 4X4s you might not have too much choice without some waiting around. If all else fails there is also the train as another option for your girlfriend, take first class all the way through to Khartoum, it is quite an experience.
Good luck

Hi Tiffany. Consensus is that Tina will be hotter in a train, more physically battered on an old unsprung bus, and will ultimately miss out on a classic route for adventure touring from Wadi Halfa to Dongola. Who am i to argue?
People have advised that most of the route will be manageable 2-up on the XT600E. And that she'll only have to walk a few hundred metres in the sand. My biggest fear is that her period will coincide with a 50 degree day and deep sand, she'll blame me, and i'll hear the Valkyries overhead! I fear her more than the trip itself.

i think you will meet travellers on the road you can ask.
or you will ask a sudanese to bring you (or her) to khartoum (or dongola, i think the asphalt begins before khartoum)
good luck,
i will do this route end of march/april this year, maybe, we will see us.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
