Winter in South America 2012-2013
I am leaving New York towards the middle of October for a 6 month tour of South America, via Central America. That would put me at the Mexico/Texas border at best, around the 21st of October..
My rough goal is to spend time around Rio and end up down around Tierra del Fuego around the first of the year, eventually heading back up the west side of the continent in spring..
If anyone is interested in hooking up for any parts. I am pretty flexible on the schedule but would definitely like to see some sights going down, like pyramids, hike a volcano and find some good places to take some extended breaks, maybe renting a place for a month here or there once I got into South America (Rio, Patagonia and Cusco come to mind). I am also interested in camping if it is worth it and safe. I would also being interested in exchanging work for a place to stay at times if it would help with expenses. I want to see as much as I can and do it as cheaply as possible...
Sharing lodging expenses would be a big plus to travelling with someone. I have experience riding in Central America but not South America. My Spanish is quite limited, but is useable.

Barring any major setbacks I shall be heading to South America from Vancouver at the beginning of October. My time limit is one month shy of yours (my wife is being very generous and understanding!) and I would like to meet as many locals and MC travellers along the way as chance allows. If schedules (mine is flexible) permit it would be great to meet up. How are you crossing the Darien Gap? Under the Central America forum there is talk of a ferry service starting up May 10th. That would help the budget out considerably. Hope to see you on the road,

The gap
I as of yet have not researched it enough. I will have to check out the Costa Rica one, that would save some time going through Pananama for sure. How much is it? Does it go to Cartegana?
I have been in touch with Francisco in Venezuela and he recommends taking the ferry out of Manuas on the Amazon (a four day trip) en route to Rio and Sao Paulo.. Lots of research to be done yet for sure. Already I can see time and money constraints starting to raise their heads. So much distance and possible expenses.
Perhaps we can continue to stay in touch and see where we are at in fall, perhaps we could hook up at least for Central America, which might help with expenses.

Research, research, research! I hear you. Just when you think you have it all figured out something else pops up. I really enjoy discovering all this information though, lots of it here on the HUBB. Here is the link for the article concerning the new ferry service between Panama and Columbia:

Wow. If that Ferry service comes to be and continues - that will be a huge help for motorcyclists, - and a cost savings as well

Similar trip and timing
Hi Nanagosa4 and Mikeymoto,

seems we are all on approximately the same schedule for hitting the Americas. I am living Winnipeg, Canada in June and will be touring the USA working my way towards Mexico and then downwards. I am planning to hit the border in Oct as well!. I am flexible so if I get to excited and bored of the states I may hit Mexico earlier, but who knows. Would be fun to hook up somewhere along the way if possible.

And thanks for the ferry info as I have book marked it. Your ptior choice was to fly or small boat from Panama to Columbia. This will be a much needed service for adventure travellers.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
