Bike Insurance Required South Africa to Kenya
I tried the search engine but maybe I am asking the wrong question. Can anyone advise me on where to get insurance for 2 South Africa Registered bikes I have bought there and want to ride up to Kenya?
I can manage COMESA (3rd Party) insurance but would like to try and get Comprehensive if possible. Coverage would be for about 3 weeks and riding through South Africa/ Botswana/ Zambia/ Malawi/ Tanzania/ Kenya.
I intend to keep the bikes in Kenya.
Keep hitting brick walls in SA....
Thanks Sean

South African Bike Insurance
Sean Hi - the other XT girl - Mardi :-) is in the know with regards insurance for bikes in SA. We have two bikes in the Cape that I believe her nephew has sorted with insurance - drop her a line and ask her, I might be wrong, but I'm fairly sure she will be able to point you in the right direction - xtgirls@gmail.co.uk - I'll drop her a line to read your thread
She's a font of knowledge about this sort of thing!
BTW - I've got a two week trip around Namibia in two weeks time with the bikes - what travel insurance are you taking for your trip - soooo many out there, I wondered if you perhaps had any tips on that front?

H Gigi,
I was beginning to despair about getting a reply! 100 people had read it -with no answer- then you came along! Thanks! Will certainly contact Mardi for help.
With regard to insurance I contacted Direct Line. 23 days of travel cover, including medical of 5 Million pounds and repatriation if required, as well as 1500 pounds of baggage cover - even from the bike if unattended (So long as it as locked in the panniers) and a host of other things including delayed trip coverage and lost documents etc etc cost 51 pounds, which I though was pretty good. If you apply on line there is a discount, but you can't do that as you need to tell them about the bike and the web does not let you do that. So, the very helpful guy I spoke to agreed to give me the web application discount anyway! The number I called was 0845-246-5588.
Thanks again for your help.
Have a safe trip.
Sean

Insurance
Hey Sean - no worries, you're more than welcome, I hope Mardi can help - also another email to try Mardi on is mardivanheerden@gmail.com
Thanks for the heads up on insurance, certainly cheaper than Carole Nash, who quoted me £93 - I'll give them a ring now
Your trip sounds really exciting, what route you guys taking? Hey if you go anywhere near Namibia from South Africa (guess that would be if you travel from Cape Town) - I can post some tips etc when I get back for places you might want to stop at on your way up to Kenya.
Keep safe

Gigi,
Thanks again. Our original plan WAS to do the Cape Town bit, but as I was buying the bikes in SA I had to rely on friends and HUBB friends to help source them. We eventually found them in JNB/Pretoria - after looking at 34 different bikes- most not QUITE as advertised.....Settled on a 2007 Dakar and a 2006 650GS. Both will be just right for the roads in Kenya and should not give too much heartache on the way up. (He said, with fingers and toes crossed!)
So it is a pretty straightforward route JNB/ Botswana/ Zambia/ Malawi/ Tz then home. Around 6,000Kms or so including a shake down run around the Eastern Transvaal before we really do set off. And tips/hints etc you can pass on would be really appreciated and if you pass Kenya sometime make sure you call in!
Best wishes,
Sean

Travel Insurance
Hey Sean - just wanted to say a very big Thank you!!! Direct line were brilliant - got the sort of cover you mentioned plus some white water rafting is covered for £41.61 - which beats Carole Nash's £93!! Thanks for the heads up, would never have thought to approach Direct Line (I think it also helped that I used to have car insurance with them)

Hi Sean or anyone who knows about this
I am in the process purchasing a bike in SA and then drive back to Zanzibar where I leave . How did you register your bikes in your name ? Do I need a address in SA. Is there such a thing like a custom number plate registration (like in Europe) which gives you some time in SA and let you enter all countries on the way and the final destination where the bike would be ultimatly registered ?
Thanks for your knowledge and help .
Sunny greetings from Zanzibar
Clemens

Have you solved the problem yet or do you need me to tell you the "odd" way I did it?
Cheers
