Carnet for South America
Hello!!!
I've been scanning horizonunlimited.com for information about a carnet du passage for South America. Sometimes I hear i do need a carnet for South America, and the a reaction to JIMMYGO on http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb...ML/000132.html seams he doesn't need one. I'm planning a trip around South America Starting in Januari 2002 in Venezuela( I'm shipping my bike into La guaira ). After Venezuela I want to travel through the Guyana's to Brazil. Down the coast of Brazil to Rio. From Rio across to Bolovia either through Paraguay or Argentina( depending on the rainy season ) From Bolivia to Peru and down the amazon back to Manaus( Brazil ) and back up to Venezuela. Fist off I planned on buying a bike in Caracas. After asking around shipping my own bike seemed to be a better option. A carnet in The Netherlands (my country) costs twice the value of my bike.
Can anyone give me some advice on this issue?
Cheers from Amsterdam

Hai Mark,
The bond you have to post for the carnet will be returned to you (if you have all the stamps). Also it's possible to give a bank-garanty instead.
An other option is a carnet from the ADAC. The fie's (Lege's) are a bit higher, but the bond is mucho lower. See the posting of "a cheap carnet" in this section.
Good luck and CU on the road.

Maarten has the right info on the carnet to my knowledge, ADAC is very good for pricing, and the guarantee is the best / cheapest way to go.
For South America you don't NEED the carnet at all, except flying into Ecuador as previously noted., (Although this is not an absolute - it can be done without, but is tricky.)
However, a carnet DOES ease and can speed up passage, so if it's cheap enough why not. It WILL save you money in fees at border crossings.
$200US is a great price for shipping - please go to the shipping page at http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/tri...shipping.shtml and let us know how you did it.

My Exprience
Just took a trip with my 17 yr old son Peru-Brazil-Bolivia-Peru Around the Block 2007 | with rented bikes out of Peru. We traveled as Americans on our US passports only, with US and Inter-American moto licenses (which they NEVER asked to see!) The only paperwork they were interested in was our passports and the moto titles and rental agreements. Of course we traveled on back routes and spoke fluent Spanish.
Don't know if that helps any....

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
